Night 3 (aka the third try is not the charm)
8:03-8:08 Julian starts crying as soon as I put him down. After five minutes, I pat his back and tell him it’s time to go to sleep.
8:08-8:11 more crying, and then he falls asleep.
11:00ish wakes up to nurse, back to sleep no crying
1:00 wakes up to nurse again
1:09-1:43 cry, cry, crying. We comfort after the first 9 minutes, again 5 minutes later, and then leave him alone since the comforting seems to work him up
3:30 time to eat again! This time I just leave him in bed with us and he sleeps soundly until a little after 6.
7:52-7:55 crying, settles down, on and off whimpering
7:57-7:59 more crying, Erin goes in, rubs his back and he falls asleep by 8:02
10:50 wakes up to nurse, goes back to sleep no crying
2:09-2:14 crying, I realize he’s probably hungry, he eats and goes back to sleep no crying
5:30 wakes up to nurse, he stays in bed with us and sleeps until 7:15 (the last one out of bed!)
7:55-8:00 crying, after a quick pat on the back, he cries for one more minute and falls asleep at 8:02
10:30 wakes up to nurse, back to sleep no crying
2:30 wakes up to nurse, back to sleep no crying
5:15 wakes up to nurse, he sleeps with us in bed until a little after 7
I feel like we’ve settled into a pretty good pattern here. We’re not sleep training naps. Julian’s a master cat napper – unless he’s in a wrap or carrier, in which case, he’ll nap for a solid two hours – but he’s not cranky throughout the day, and we can deal with short naps if we’ve had a good night’s sleep.
The next step in sleep adventures will be room sharing, but that won’t happen until he’s night weaned. I’ll let Julian decide when he’s done with night feedings, unless he’s like 18 months and still nursing in the middle of the night!
